Brief Orthodontic FAQs

Can I still play sports while undergoing orthodontic procedures?

Yes, you can, but you would be advised by your Brisbane orthodontist that you would need to wear a mouth guard just to be sure that your teeth, gums, and tongue are protected. You can inquire about customised mouthguards when you call Brisbane Orthodontists right now!

Do I need a dentist’s referral when I want to see an orthodontist?

Not necessarily. You can go and visit your preferred orthodontist for a comprehensive consultation. We just advise our clients to report to their family dentist prior to our consultation for a general dental check-up. If you do not have one, we can provide those services for you. Remember that you still need to see your general dentist for routine follow-ups even while undergoing an orthodontic procedure so that regular dental procedures can still be addressed.

How much would it cost me to have an orthodontic treatment?

The answer to this question would depend on the severity of your problem and the orthodontic procedure to be used. Don’t worry too much because, at Brisbane Orthodontists, we have affordable treatment package options and convenient payment schemes to make your stay with us hassle-free. You can be sure that with Brisbane Orthodontists, the quality of the procedure is worth every dollar you spent. Contact us now to know more!

Invisalign

Developed by Align Technology, Inc., the Invisalign treatment system, assures a ‘virtually invisible’ approach in straightening your teeth. Using smooth and clear dental aligners to gradually and systematically manipulate and position your teeth correctly, it is the latest innovation in the field of orthodontics that can solve malocclusion, abnormal teeth spacing, and more!

The Brisbane Orthodontists is proud to offer this orthodontic innovation to our valued clients. Contact Brisbane Orthodontists and inquire about Invisalign System today!

Advantages of the Invisalign System:

Brisbane Orthodontists believes that all orthodontic treatments are considered effective in straightening crooked and overcrowded teeth; however, there are some benefits that are unique for Invisalign and cannot be found from any other orthodontic treatment available in the market.

  • It is removable: Unlike traditional braces that are fixed to your teeth, Invisalign aligners appear and look like dental trays used for teeth whitening that you should wear 20-22 hours a day, giving your 2-4 hours to eat, drink, and clean your teeth freely.
  • It is discreet: Invisalign aligners are made of smooth clear specialized plastic, tightly fitted to your teeth, making it almost unnoticeable for people to see. As their slogan would say, Invisalign aligners are “virtually invisible”.
  • It is almost pain-free: As metal fixtures from traditional braces scratch or cut the insides of your mouth, Invisalign is a smooth dental aligner that would not irritate any part of your mouth. Getting accustomed to wearing the aligners as your orthodontic treatment appliance will be easier than ever.
  • It is hygienic: No more hard-to-reach edges due to fixed metal gears on your teeth. Since it is removable, brushing and flossing your teeth will not be a bother anymore.

More Information about the Invisalign System

  • The entire Invisalign System comprises of approximately 18-36 sets of aligners (depending on the type of Invisalign system and the complexity of your orthodontic problem) issued to you chronologically, which is why it is called a system. The order for which these aligners are arranged has been calculated and planned by Align Technology’s ClinChek treatment plan using their SmartForce Technology.
  • Each set of aligners has to be worn for approximately 2-3 weeks. New sets will be issued by your Brisbane orthodontist for your scheduled use until your next dental appointment.
  • Dental appointments will be scheduled every 6-8 weeks, depending on the severity of your problem and your adherence to the treatment process. During the follow-up, your orthodontist will monitor the progress of your treatment and if additional refinements need to be made. You will also be issued with the appropriate sets of aligners that will last you until the next appointment.
  • The dental aligners, though they are removable, should be strictly worn for 20-22 hours a day. Following this diligently will enable the treatment procedure to work efficiently.
  • You can enjoy your favourite drink and food while on Invisalign, just as long as you remove it before consuming your food and you brush and floss your teeth after every meal.
  • Though your speech may be affected by the dental aligners as first, this will only be temporary as your tongue may be able to easily adjust to the smooth surface of your Invisalign aligners.
  • Depending on the how complicated your teeth alignment issues are, it would take approximately 12-18 months (for full Invisalign treatment) before you may be able to see the final results of the Invisalign treatment. However, due to its modern technology, you may be able to get a glimpse of the changes to your teeth alignment in just a few months. Moreover, because of their ClinCheck Technology, you can also take a peek at what your teeth would look like after the Invisalign System treatment, even before the treatment even started!

Braces

Dental braces are the first orthodontic treatment invented and used by dentists to treat malocclusion. Traditionally, they are metal brackets attached to the teeth and secured by metal wires, designed to move and gradually position your teeth to correct their alignment.

As time passes, improvements in traditional braces have been made to address aesthetic and comfort issues that it poses. The rise of other forms of braces was also noted and was considered effective teeth straightening alternative treatment.

Kinds of Dental Braces:

Metal braces

Metal braces made of high-grade stainless steel, are the traditional forms of dental braces. Its metal brackets are glued to the front side of the teeth and secured by metal wires that are gradually adjusted to move and straighten the teeth alignment. As the years pass by, these braces became a bit smaller than its previous look. Because these have been tried and tested to correct malocclusion, metal braces are still the preferred choice of many as their orthodontic treatment.

Ceramic braces

Also called white braces because, instead of using metal fixtures, ceramic gears are glued to the teeth, ceramic braces are a bit more concealed and less obvious than the traditional metal ones. This kind of dental braces answers the common complaint about metal braces being too noticeable and eye-catching. The fixtures attached to the teeth are customized to fit the same colour of your teeth, making them a bit more discreet and low-key. However, since they are made of clear ceramic and not durable steel, they are more delicate and may damage easily. Extra care is needed when maintaining and cleaning your ceramic braces.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces, on the other hand, are metal braces that are attached to the back of the teeth, making it gain its name as ‘incognito’ or ‘concealed’ metal braces. Many are drawn to this type of dental braces because its metal gears are unseen anytime to smile and speak. However, because it is placed at the back of the teeth and very near the tongue, it may somehow affect your eating habits and speech more than the traditional metal braces would.

Dental retainers

After undergoing an orthodontic procedure, use of retainers is needed to maintain the results that have been achieved by your preferred orthodontic procedure. It may be considered that wearing retainers post-procedure is as important as the procedure itself because, without it, the correction your orthodontic treatment made will be for nothing.

This dental appliance may be made of plastic and metal materials (depending on the type) that support and hold the teeth to its new position after wearing braces or any orthodontic treatment. They may be fixed or removable based on the severity of the dental problem that was fixed by a previous orthodontic procedure.

A fixed retainer is a thin stainless wire positioned behind the teeth (like lingual braces). It may be a bit difficult to maintain as it may be a good hiding place of food particles causing plaque, but it may steer you away from forgetting to wear retainers as they are already bonded to your teeth.

A removable retainer, on the other hand, has a wire positioned in front of the teeth secured by an acrylic or plastic base to maintain your straightened teeth. Use of this type of retainer depends on your situation and dentist’s recommendation; some may opt for you to wear it all day, removing it when eating, brushing your teeth, or playing sports, while some may ask you to just wear it every night.

Care for your dental retainers is the same as caring for your braces or clear aligners. You need to wear them during the day and especially at night, as teeth can still move even while sleeping. Your dentist would determine the length of time you would need to wear them and if any other adjustments need to be made to help you achieve perfectly aligned teeth.

TMJ Appliances

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) happens when there is a problem on the joint that connects the jawbone to the bone on the skull. This problem is sometimes hard to notice, and will only manifest in relation to other problems concerning your teeth or oral cavity.

Some symptoms associated with TMD may include experiencing a ‘lockjaw’, or your jaws getting stuck when you open your mouth, hearing a clicking sound when you open/close your mouth, and swelling, tenderness, and/or pain on the face and jaw area. These symptoms may be addressed symptomatically; they may go away without any dental or medical attention, or some dentists turn to TMJ appliances to help prevent them from recurring.

A TMJ appliance is a splint that looks like a bite plate made of plastic, acrylic resin, or soft prefabricated material. It is also called a bite guard that you wear to fit over your upper and lower teeth. It maintains the position of the teeth and prevents them from grinding their teeth, a disorder called bruxism, which can worsen TMD. It is also designed to lessen the pressure that the jaw joints and bones as well as allowing the jaw muscles to relax. These appliances may be worn all day, and/or while sleeping, depending on your dentist’s recommendation.

If you are experiencing the above-mentioned symptoms and are not sure what to do, contact Brisbane Orthodontists and we will gladly answer all your questions and see if TMD is the reason for your complaints. We will also provide solutions to help you seek medical advice and attention so you can solve your discomfort and symptoms.

Call our Brisbane Orthodontists clinic and be made aware of our available procedures and treatments to solve your TMJ disorders.
